From Lived Experience to Climate Leadership
Joy’s advocacy is rooted in everyday environmental injustice. Growing up without reliable clean water — fetching and carrying water into her late teens — and watching open dumping harm community health sparked a lasting curiosity about environmental solutions. In 2018 she began researching climate and environmental issues and volunteering with nonprofits. A defining early leadership moment came through a Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) service event, where she designed a student climate-and-waste education project, showcased a skirt crafted from old newspapers to demonstrate upcycling, and donated materials to encourage recycling at the host school.
She later held leadership roles with Rees Africa (including secretary, team lead, and state lead) before founding Africa Upcycle Community in 2021 to educate communities, shape policy conversations, and strengthen climate response on the ground.
Work and Impact
Through Africa Upcycle Community, Joy runs programmes across African contexts — especially communities facing climate stress — covering:
- Waste management and practical upcycling skills
- Climate education and environmental protection
- Corporate governance and community development
- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) education
- Skills and decision-making pathways for women and young people
Beyond community delivery, she engages policymakers so lived experience from climate-affected communities informs national and international decisions. She has contributed Global South perspectives to climate policy conversations involving three European governments, collaborated with UNESCO on climate and youth participation, and spoken at more than 30 events across five continents.
Challenges and Lessons
- Funding: Sustaining community programmes requires relentless grant-seeking and partnership building.
- Youth exclusion in policy: Joy urges young people to study their countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), track commitments, and speak up when progress stalls.
- Language barriers: Working with interpreters helps communities fully participate in training and dialogue.
Her through-line: seek support, collaborate, and keep solving problems practically.
What’s Next
Joy plans to keep publishing policy writing, expanding training that turns waste into livelihood skills, and deepening partnerships with governments and international organisations. A flagship upcoming effort is the Waste-to-Craft Train-the-Trainer Programme (launched around 31 October 2026), designed to multiply upcycling skills across communities.
Advice to Young Changemakers
“Don’t stop dreaming, speaking and learning. Do what you can to change the world. It does count.”
