About UNICEF Femtech Ventures (2025 - 2030)

Women and girls constitute half of the world's population, yet women’s healthcare attracts merely six percent of private digital health investment globally. The deficit is especially acute in emerging economies across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where geographical isolation, social stigma, and under-resourced healthcare infrastructures compound health inequities.

To overcome this imbalance, the UNICEF Venture Fund launched Femtech Ventures - a multi-year $100M+ strategic platform (2025 - 2030) designed to invest in hyperlocal, locally engineered solutions built by founders close to the challenges they address. With the global femtech sector projected to exceed US$146 billion by 2033, UNICEF is positioning public-good innovators in developing markets to capture market opportunities while solving urgent health challenges.

Three Thematic Investment Pillars

The 2026 call seeks solutions across three primary areas of impact:

1. Healthcare Access for Women and Girls

Point-of-Care Diagnostic Tools: Automated interpretation algorithms using computer vision and sensor data to assist frontline community health workers without specialized diagnostic equipment.
Accessible Screening for Neglected Conditions: Rapid digital screenings for anaemia, ferritin deficiencies, haemoglobinopathies, and maternal thyroid dysfunction tailored to primary health posts.
Continuity of Care Platforms: Distributed digital platforms supporting the maternal care continuum from conception through the first 1,000 days of childhood in low-bandwidth environments.
Health Logistics & Supply Forecasting: Predictive demand planning algorithms ensuring maternal medications, sanitary goods, and critical consumables reach remote clinics on time.

2. Informed, Safe, and Accessible Reproductive Health

AI-Powered Multilingual Health Education: Conversational agents and voice-first platforms delivering private, culturally nuanced SRHR counseling in indigenous and underserved languages.
Frontline Worker Case Management: Interoperable digital tools enabling community health workers to coordinate referrals, follow-up treatments, and HPV preventive interventions.
Fintech for Women's Healthcare: Micro-insurance platforms, community health savings pools, and flexible payment systems enabling women to access essential reproductive care without financial catastrophe.
Consent & Privacy-Preserving Architectures: Zero-knowledge proofs and decentralized identifiers safeguarding sensitive maternal and reproductive health data against unauthorized access.

3. Mental Wellbeing, Safety, and Protection

Culturally Grounded Psychosocial Support: Digital mental health tools addressing postpartum depression, trauma, and adolescent mental health integrated with existing national health systems (such as DHIS2).
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Early Detection: Encrypted, trauma-informed digital reporting systems connecting survivors with rapid legal, medical, and psychosocial response services.
AI-Enabled Online Safety & Anti-Harassment Tools: Automated detection algorithms flagging cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and digital stalking directed at girls and female public figures.
Frontline Educator & Worker Training: Interactive digital modules preparing teachers, midwives, and social workers to identify mental health distress and domestic safety risks early.

Investment Benefits & Growth Support

Selected ventures receive a comprehensive growth acceleration package:

Seed Funding: Up to US$100,000 in equity-free funding disbursed in milestone-based tranches.
12 Months of Technical Mentorship: One-on-one technical coaching from UNICEF software engineers, data science leads, open-source licensing specialists, and cybersecurity experts.
Pathways to National Scale: Direct connections with UNICEF Country Offices and national ministries of health, education, and gender across more than 190 countries.
Open-Source Public Good Acceleration: Support in registering your software as a certified Digital Public Good (DPG), unlocking institutional procurement opportunities with UN agencies and development banks.
Follow-on Capital Pipeline: Access to a network of commercial impact investors, philanthropic funds, and bilateral donors (previous UNICEF Venture Fund cohort companies have raised over 11x follow-on investment).

Eligibility Criteria

Startups must meet the following mandatory criteria:

Company Registration: Must be legally incorporated as a private company or social enterprise in an eligible UNICEF programme country (spanning emerging economies across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East).
Functional Working Prototype: Must possess a tested functional prototype (minimum viable product) with initial user traction or pilot validation. Idea-stage concepts without a working build are ineligible.
Open-Source Commitment: The core solution must be committed to open-source licensing (under OSI-approved licenses like MIT, Apache 2.0, or GPL) or open data standards, ensuring long-term sustainability as a digital public good.
Frontier Technology: Must leverage advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (machine learning, generative models, agentic workflows), blockchain, decentralized data architectures, or advanced data science.
Hyperlocal Validation: Solutions designed and tested within local communities with deep attention to data privacy, ethical AI, and user safety-by-design.
Inclusivity Focus: Female founders, gender-diverse leadership teams, and young entrepreneurs under the age of 35 are particularly encouraged to submit applications.
