Apply for the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027-28 in the UK (Fully Funded) - doctoral awards from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) for candidates from least developed countries and vulnerable Commonwealth states, funded by the UK FCDO.

These scholarships support full-time PhD research at approved UK universities for 36 months, starting September/October 2027. Applications open on Tuesday 8 September 2026 and close at 16:00 BST on Tuesday 20 October 2026 via CSC Central. You must also apply through a nominating agency - the CSC does not accept direct-only applications.

Eligibility

  • Citizen of (or refugee status from) an eligible Commonwealth country, or British Protected Person
  • Permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Available to start in the UK by September 2027
  • By September 2027: first degree of at least 2:1, or a 2:2 plus a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s)*
  • Not registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in the home country before September/October 2026
  • Unable to afford UK study without the scholarship
  • All required supporting documents uploaded by the deadline

*Some disabled applicants may use contextual nomination via the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum - see CSC guidance.

Scholars commit to returning home after the award. No CSC age limit (check employer leave rules).

Eligible Countries (PhD programme list)

Bangladesh, The Gambia, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Zambia.

How to Apply

  1. Read the official call: Commonwealth PhD Scholarships.
  2. Identify your national nominating agency (or eligible NGO) and its earlier internal deadline.
  3. Contact a proposed UK supervisor and secure a supporting statement.
  4. From 8 September 2026, apply on CSC Central and submit by 20 October 2026, 16:00 BST.
  5. Upload passport/ID, full transcripts, at least two PDF references, and a UK supervisor supporting statement (PDF).
  6. Complete the Development Impact statement and research plan (fit for 36 months).
  7. Nominators forward candidates in December 2026; selection is from nominations only (nomination ≠ award).

How long is the scholarship?

36 months of full-time PhD study only.

Do I need a UK supervisor letter?

Yes. A signed supporting statement from a proposed UK supervisor at one of your named institutions is required.

Can I already be enrolled in a PhD?

You must not be registered for a PhD (or MPhil leading to a PhD) in the UK or your home country before September/October 2026.

Is Pakistan eligible?

Yes - Pakistan is on the official PhD eligible-country list. Confirm on the live CSC page when you apply.
