The JSPS Fellowship in Japan for 2026 - 2027 is currently accepting applications. Candidates from all over the world are eligible to apply for this fully funded international fellowship, which is provided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Depending on the host institution and research project, the fellowship can last anywhere from one to twelve months.

By giving them the chance to carry out advanced research in Japanese universities or research institutes, the program seeks to assist pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and early-career researchers. It is intended to promote global cooperation and assist early-career researchers in expanding their areas of competence.

All nationalities are eligible to apply for the fellowship, and there is no application cost. There will be 120 fellowships given out in all. Below are further specifics regarding the application procedure, financial assistance, and qualifying requirements.

International scholars from all nations are welcome, with the exception of Japanese people.
Note — Candidates must be early-career researchers with a solid academic background, pre-doctoral (PhD candidates), or post-doctoral researchers.
Also, Before the fellowship begins, PhD candidates must have formally been assured that they will receive their degree.
Plus, Applicants must be in a different category and not have previously held a JSPS fellowship.
Requirement: Prior to applying, a host researcher and institution in Japan had to be set up.
Must exhibit a good capacity for research and show how the suggested study relates to their academic growth.
Note — To do research in Japan, applicants must be in good physical and mental health.
Also, Proficiency in either Japanese or English is required for effective communication and the advancement of research.

Plus, International round-trip airfare between the fellow’s home country and Japan is covered by the fellowship. The purpose of the economy class flights is to guarantee a seamless journey to and from the host institution.
Requirement: Monthly Maintenance Allowance (JPY 362,000): During their stay in Japan, fellows are given a stipend of JPY 362,000 per month to help with living costs like housing, food, local transportation, and other necessities.
A one-time settling-in payment of JPY 200,000 is given to fellows upon arrival to assist with initial costs, including housing deposits, household goods, and other essentials during the relocation process.
Note — Overseas Travel Insurance: To ensure peace of mind while conducting research in Japan, comprehensive travel insurance is offered for the duration of the fellowship, covering medical costs, injuries, and other unanticipated travel-related concerns.
